Holding On and Letting Go: The Act Of Surrender

  • Chrysalis Institute 3527 Ellwood Avenue Richmond, VA, 23221 United States (map)

Life is a process of change and growth. We know this to be true on every level of our being. We grow and outgrow things physically, emotionally, relationally, intellectually, and spiritually. Jung wrote that any encounter with the Self brings a defeat for the ego. He is describing the experience of the archetypal that accompanies times of crisis and change.

It is our human condition to consider surrender when all else seems to have failed and we do not know what to do next or where to turn. When faced with such, one might begin to ask - what is the nature of surrender? How do we surrender without giving up?  What is it that we surrender to? What are the spiritual lessons of surrender?

Over the course of 3-weeks, we will explore these questions. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges of surrender and Jung’s thoughts on the process of Individuation and of the relationship between Self and Ego.

Everett G. McLaren is a Jungian Analyst who trained with the Inter Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. Retired from clinical practice, he is on the faculty of The New Orleans Jungian Seminar and is actively involved in the training of analysts with the Inter Regional Society of Jungian Analysts.
