People of Color Mindfulness Community Group

The POC Mindfulness Community Group is a drop in group and open to anyone who self-identifies as a person of color. Whether you have an established mindfulness/meditation practice or have never practiced before this group is intended to be a safe space to honor, celebrate, and share our experiences. This practice is to support the collective well-being of each other through mindfulness, self-compassion and dialogue.

Valuing and protecting spaces for people of color[…] is crucial to the resistance of oppression. When people of color are together, there can be healing. These spaces aren’t acts of oppression, but rather responses to it.

John Taylor is a Chrysalis faculty member where he teaches MBSR and has served on the faculty of Chrysalis' six month Spiritual Paths program. John has practiced Reiki, Quantum Touch and other hands on healing modalities for over 30 years. His MBSR teacher training is through the University of California, San Diego.

Elisa Bennett started her journey with mindfulness during her yoga teacher training in Boca Raton, FL. Through a variety of workshops such as Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindful Self-Compassion as well as silent retreats, she cultivated a daily practice of reconnecting with self which allows her to embrace daily triggers of stress in healthier and more meaningful ways. One of her favorite quotes by Eckhart Tolle is, “You are the sky. The clouds are what happens, what comes and goes.”

Carolina Bautista-Velez is an immigrant, Latinx, activist, professional life coach and consultant. Her mindfulness journey started back in 2016 after attending the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction class. Since then, Carolina has incorporated mindfulness practices in her daily life. She has also taken other trainings such as Mindfulness Self- Compassion, Cultivating Compassion and has joined practice groups in DC and VA. She believes our internal liberation contributes to the liberation of others. This has led her to deepened her understanding and share her skills with individuals and groups on the role of self-care and self-compassion as a tool of resistance and social change.
