Yoga for Queer Identifying Folx is a monthly yoga class aiming to provide a safe space for queer folx to explore and heal the body and mind while in community with one another. Each class incorporates a mix of meditation, breath work and postures allowing folx an opportunity to form new ways of relating to their minds and bodies with mindfulness, acceptance and loving kindness.
This class is an all levels slow flow class for queer-identified folx fourteen or older who are looking for resources to navigate the ups and downs of life. With an emphasis on linking slow and steady breath with subtle movement to balance the nervous system, the yoga postures and transitions are basic. Ample time is provided to linger in poses to enjoy the pleasant sensations of stretching and breathing as well as to build heat and practice using the breath through discomfort. Curriculum is trauma sensitive and could serve as a helpful adjunct to individual counseling. Skills to be developed include self-awareness, mind-body integration, distress tolerance and self-compassion.
Chrysalis will provide yoga mats, blocks, straps and blankets.
Morgan Alexandra is the Domestic and Sexual Violence Services Coordinator/Shelter Manager at Hanover Safe Place. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from Christopher Newport University and has 5 years of experience in the field of Sexual and Domestic Violence Intervention and Prevention. Morgan completed her 200-Hour Registered Yoga Teacher certification at Om On Yoga in Richmond, VA in December 2014. She has also completed training in yoga for trauma and resiliency through Sacred Roots Wellness in Asheville, North Carolina. Morgan has facilitated several yoga support groups for trauma-survivors at various Richmond, VA non-profit organizations and yoga studios. As an Ambassador for Project Yoga Richmond, Morgan leads Love Your Body Yoga, a trauma-informed yoga class for women, and a weekly yoga class at St. Josephs Villa Crisis Stabilization Center for youth in mental-health crisis.
